2010-11: Gormley made his pro hockey debut as a 19-year-old, skating in four AHL games for San Antonio following a point-per-game season for the QMJHL's Moncton Wildcats. He had 1 goal and was -1 in limited action with the Rampage. Gormley was the leading scorer amongst defensemen for Moncton despite playing just 47 games due to an early season knee injury. That injury prevented Gormley from playing for Canada at the 2011 U20 World Junior Championship. With Moncton he scored 13 goals with 35 assists. Gormley's -16 plus/minus was troubling, but partially reflected him scoring 9 of his 13 goals on the power play. He finished with 42 PMs. Moncton advanced to the playoffs after finishing third in its division and in five playoff games Gormley was -2 with an assist and 6 PMs. He was named to the QMJHL Second All-Star team.
Talent Analysis
A talented two-way defenseman, Gormley provides excellent skill, poise and leadership on the back-end. He is as solid as a rock in his own zone and never shies away from contact. He is very calm with the puck on his stick and can slow the game down to make smart reads with passing or to keep the puck and carry it himself. An excellent skater, Gormley also possesses a bullet of a point shot which he utitlizes by keeping it low and accurate.
Future
Throughout his junior career Gormley has ranked as one of the best all-around blue-liners in the CHL and projects as a top-pair defenseman at the NHL level. His ability to put up points both five-on-five and on the powerplay coupled with his strong defensive presence has Gormley seemingly on the cusp of the NHL at just 19 years of age.
