History

2006-07: Maxime Clermont was chosen in the first round, 13th overall, of the 2007 QMJHL Draft by the Gatineau Olympiques.

2007-08: In his QMJHL rookie season, Clermont played in 29 games for the Olympiques, going 13-7-0 in those games.  He finished with a 2.89 goals-against average and a .895 save percentage.  In 3 playoff games, Clermont had a 3.20 goals-against average and a .813 save percentage.

2008-09: Clermont played in 49 games for the Olympique, finishing with a 3.22 goals-against average, a .884 save percentage, and a 25-20-0 record.  In 2 playoff games, Clermont had just 10 minutes of action.

2009-10: In his third QMJHL season, Clermont played in 59 games for the Olympique.  He turned in a 2.81 goals-against average, a .897 save percentage, and a 24-31-0 record on the season.  In 11 playoff games, he had a 3.59 goals-against average and a .897 save percentage.  Played for Team Cherry at the 2010 Top Prospects Game.

2010-11: Clermont had an uneven fourth season with a Gatineau team that was one of the best defensive teams in the QMJHL; but appeared to iron out his problems and played well in the league playoffs. In 48 regular season games for the Olympiques Clermont was 28-15 with four shutouts and had a 2.55 GAA and .896 save percentage but saw less action as Francois Lacerte took over late in the season. Lacerte started the first three playoff games but was replaced by Clermont nine minutes into Game 3 against Rimouski. Clermont started 19 of 20 playoff games after that as the Olympiques reached the finals against eventual Memorial Cup champion Saint John. In 21 playoff games he was 11-10 with one shutout and had a 2.22 GAA and .927 save percentage. Clermont signed a three-year, entry-level contract with New Jersey in August 2011.

2011-12: Clermont spent most of his first pro season with the ECHL's Kalamazoo Wings; appearing in two AHL games with the Devils' AHL affiliate Albany. He had a win in October against Providence – stopping 28 of 30 shots in his first AHL start – and then played in a 2-1 loss to Syracuse on April 15th – stopping 21 of 23 shots. Clermont and former Western Michigan University goalie Riley Gill split the goaltending for the K-Wings. Clermont appeared in 31 games and was 13-13,  with three of the losses coming in overtime, and had a 3.42 goals against and .891 save percentage. Kalamazoo reached the Eastern Conference finals after finishing first in the North Division. Clermont appeared in one playoff game as Gill started all 14 games and allowed 3 goals on 18 shots in 35 minutes of action.

 

Talent Analysis

Technically sound, aggressive and possessing a good sized frame, Clermont plays the angles well and shows a willingness to challenge opposing shooters. He controls his rebounds well and has a good glove hand. His game will continue to improve as he gets quicker in the crease. He sometimes struggles at times tracking the puck through traffic, but that is something he can work on as he evolves and matures as a player. There was a bit of a steep learning curve for Clermont in the ECHL this year, but given the development time needed for goaltenders, it’s not a huge concern at this point.

 

Future

Clermont played a couple of games in the AHL, but spent the majority of last season learning the ropes the with the Devils ECHL affiliate in Kalamazoo. He will likely be back there again this season with all of the Devils goaltending prospects now eligible to play professionally, though he could challenge for full time work at the AHL level. Still a work in progress, the Devils need to let Clermont develop over the course of the next couple of seasons before they know what they really have in him.

New Jersey Devils own deep, diverse group of defensive prospects

In terms of strengths and weaknesses, not much has changed for the New Jersey Devils organization. They continue to be well stocked on the blue line, which is good for the future because, aside from Adam Larsson and Mark Fayne, the majority of defensman in New Jersey are on the wrong-side of 30. In between the pipes, the Devils have finally started to plan for future and have a solid group of goaltending prospects. Upfront is a bit of a different story. There is some decent depth at wing and center, but in terms of top-six ability, there is not much to get excited about.

The strength of the New Jersey Devils organization continues to reside in the burgeoning stable of defensemen working their way through the system. The addition of 2012 draft pick Damon Severson to a group that already includes Jon Merrill, Alexander Urbom, Eric Gelinas, and Reece Scarlett should have Devils fans frothing at the mouth about what the defense might look like in the near future. That doesn't even include Adam Larsson, who's already established himself at the NHL level.

Several Devils prospects experiencing post-season success at the highest level

The New Jersey Devils have seen a bounty of post-season success this season, most noticeably at the NHL level, where they will battle the Los Angeles Kings for the 2012 Stanley Cup. Unfortunately many of the organization's prospects can't make the same claim, with many finishing their post-seasons quite early, or in some cases not having one at all.
