History
2007-08: Played for the Elgin-Middlesex Chiefs (Minor Midget), notching 104 points (53G, 51A) in 65 games. Chosen third overall in the 2008 OHL Priority Selection by the Owen Sound Attack.
2008-09: In his rookie season in the OHL, Shipley played in 63 games, scoring 16 goals and adding 23 assists for 39 points. He played in 4 playoff games for the Attack but did not register a point.
2009-10: In 68 games for the Attack, Shipley scored 23 goals and tacked on 40 assists for 63 points. Shipley played for Team Orr at the 2010 CHL Top Prospects Game.
2010-11: Shipley spent his third OHL season with the Niagara Ice Dogs and scored 18 goals with 32 assists in 65 games. Obtained in a pre-season trade with Owen Sound for two players and three draft picks, Shipley had more of a two-way role for Niagara, which finished with the OHL's third-best record and featured a pair of 2011 NHL Draft 1st round picks (leading scorer Ryan Strome (NYI) and defenseman Dougie Hamilton (BOS)). While Shipley's offensive numbers dipped from his time with Owen Sound, his +10 plus/minus was his best to-date and he scored six power play goals. In 14 OHL playoff games, he had 1 goal with 6 assists and was +3 with 8 PMs.
Talent Analysis
Shipley has always been inconsistent and rumblings of an attitude problem may have bubbled to the surface when as a newly drafted 18 year old, he requested a trade out of Owen Sound before the 2010-11 season. Shipley is an average skater with good size and very good hands but he has yet to live up to the promise that made him the third overall selection in the OHL priority selection draft.
Future
There is no denying that Shipley has offensive talent and he is a big bodied center on a team that lacks depth down the middle, but to date he hasn’t been able to put it all together. He will need to really improve his consistency and attitude for the Sabres to consider giving him a contract in 2012 or 2013. He should have every opportunity to have a bounce back year in Niagara in 2011-12 as the Ice Dogs will be one of the top teams in the OHL.
