Balisy was +4 with 12 PMs.

2011-12: Balisy was the leading scorer for Western Michigan as a sophomore. He scored 13 goals with 24 assists and was plus-eight with 35 penalty minutes in 41 games. Former NHL coach Andy Murray took over for Jeff Blashill in Kalamazoo after the latter joined the Red Wings' organization but the Broncos did not miss a beat; finishing third in the CCHA regular season and winning the league's playoff title. Western Michigan lost to North Dakota in the NCAA West Regional semifinals.

Talent Analysis

Balisy is an intelligent, playmaking center that is really fun to watch. Two attributes that separate Balisy from many other freshmen are his ability to control the tempo of the game and the fact that he can make other players around him better. He possesses great hands and excellent puck-moving ability. He can make some of the prettiest tape-to-tape passes too. Balisy has great vision and follows plays exceedingly well. He is a very good skater that does a good job of consistently keeping his feet moving. He is also quite good in transition as well. Balisy's elusiveness and ability to move effectively through traffic makes him a difficult player to contain. As good as Balisy is offensively, he is equally good defensively. At Western Michigan this season, he proved to be an outstanding penalty killer who isn't afraid to block shots or deliver checks when necessary. He's not one to give up easily in battles for pucks either. Balisy is also very good on face-offs and supports plays really well too. Like most freshmen in college hockey, adding size and strength will be crucial to his future success.

Future

Balisy has returned to play his junior year at Western Michigan University and continue his overall development at the NCAA level. He's expected to help carry the Broncos' offense while playing on the team's top line and both of the specialty teams.

The Nashville Predators have a lot of youth in various European leagues as well as the NCAA right now. Out of their 13 prospects that play either overseas or in the NCAA, eight of them have been drafted in the past two entry drafts. The presence of players like Jimmy Vesey (Harvard, ECAC) and Pontus Åberg (Djurgårdens, Hockey Allsvenskan) suggests high offensive capability down the road for the Predators; however, true to Nashville tradition their prospects are predominately two-way players, and there are no better examples of this than Kärpät Oulu’s Miikka Salomäki and Minnesota Golden Gophers’ captain Zach Budish.

The Nashville Predators have been one of the most consistent teams over the last five years in terms of style of play. Barry Trotz and David Poile always put a team on the ice that has a defense-first mentality, and the system that the Milwaukee Admirals employ develops players that fit this mold perfectly. Homegrown players like Jonathon Blum, Roman Josi, and Gabriel Bourque have successfully made the transition from prospect to full time NHL player, and there are other players, such as Ryan Ellis, that are looking to make that jump soon as well.

The Nashville Predators have a solid talent pool with good depth and plenty of two-way prospects but the organization is severely missing the high end talent at the forward position.

The Nashville Predators have some bright light defensemen in their pipeline, and several two-way forwards that look like they just came out of the Nashville mold. The top three prospects in the organization are all blueliners with NHL experience, led by the youngest of the three, Ryan Ellis. The remainder of the top ten prospects includes some interesting forwards that run the gamut from a top checking-line, shutdown type in Austin Watson to the pure scorer Pontus Aberg, one of many 2012 draft picks making their debut in the Predators Top 20 this fall.

At the trade deadline, the Nashville Predators traded away their first round pick in 2012 as well as their second round picks in 2012 and 2013. While it may seem like they gave up a lot of future assets, they did so with the knowledge that many of their top prospects are gradually meeting their potential. The inaugural edition of the HF Prospect Awards is a testament to this notion as many of the recipients have seen time this season in the NHL.
