History

Ahlqvist was the top goalie of his age group in the country until his draft year when the younger Tuukka Rask emerged to seize the starter's post on the national team and Karri Ramo beat him to the backup's job for the World Championships. Ahlqvist has proceeded normally through the junior teams of JYP, being the starter of the junior A finalist team in 2003-04. Only a game-winning goal late in the third period of the very last game separated the team and its stellar netminder from the championship.

Talent Analysis

A mid-sized goalie with a calm, rather stand-up style isn't the norm of a good prospect nowadays, but other Finnish goalies have walked the path before successfully. Ahlqvist can be expected to adopt more of the aspects of the butterfly style in the future, he has enough quickness around which to build it. Many of his abilities can still be expected to change.

Future

Ahlqvist's tranformation into a complete form may take years, but as he isn't a top prospect, an NHL team can surely wait until the end of the decade. In about 2009 we should be looking at a balanced goalie.
