History

The Montreal native is a product of the RSL (Midget AAA) Lions organization, the same team that once developed fellow Sabres prospect Marc-Andre Gragnani. Picked by Rimouski in the 2004 QMJHL draft and later selected by Saint John in the 2005 expansion draft, Biega elected to enroll at the Salisbury (U.S. Prep) School to pave the way for a NCAA developmental route. He was a big reason for the Crimson Knights winning the New England Prep title, and was named the team’s MVP.

2006-07: Biega was named to ECAC Hockey League All-Rookie team and shared the George Percy Award with Doug Rogers as the Crimson’s top rookies. He led the league in freshmen defensemen with 18 points, placing him among the national leaders in freshmen defensemen scoring. He tied for ninth in the ECACHL in overall defenseman scoring. Biega often skated alongside David MacDonald at even strength and was part of a power-play unit that ranked eighth nationally at 20.5 percent (42 for 205). He scored three power-play goals and was one of eight players and two freshmen to play in all 33 games. He scored his first career goal in a win against No. 3 Boston College on Nov. 7.

2007-08: Biega earned ECAC Hockey third-team and all-tournament honors, as well as All-Ivy League honorable mention. He led Harvard defensemen in scoring, while ranking fourth overall on the team. He ranked third on the squad in plus/minus and helped Harvard lead ECAC Hockey in scoring defense (1.86 goals allowed per game) and penalty killing (.913, 94 for 103) in league play. He tied for seventh in Ivy League defenseman scoring in league play. Biega was paired with classmate Ian Tallett for much of the season. He had four assists in the quarterfinal series against Quinnipiac, including three assists in five playoff games.

Talent Analysis

Biega is a well-built defenseman who is a strong skater with a good shot. He has a nice physical side and is tough to beat one-on-one due to his speed. Consistency has been his biggest issue, and he has been known to be caught out of position when pinching in on offense.  Biega is a vocal, spirited leader.

Future

Plays for Harvard University.
