History
2009-10: Galchenyuk played for the Chicago Young Americans of the MWEHL. In 38 games, he scored 44 goals and added 43 assists for 87 points to go along with 56 penalty minutes. Galchenyuk was drafted in the first round, 1st overall, of the 2010 OHL Priority Selection by the Sarnia Sting.
2010-11: In his OHL rookie season, Galchenyuk played in 68 games for the Sting. He scored 31 goals and added 52 assists for 83 points. Galchenyuk was named to the OHL First All-Rookie Team for his efforts. Gallchenyuk was chosen in the second round, 25th overall, of the 2011 KHL Draft by Atlant Mytishchi.
2011-12: Galchenyuk missed all but the final two games of the regular season while recovering from a serious knee injury. He played in all six playoff games for the Sarnia Sting in their first round playoff series with Saginaw. He had no points nor penalty minutes and was minus-4 in two regular contests. Galchenyuk scored a power play goal in the first game of the Saginaw series and had points in the first three games – finishing the series with 2 goals, 2 assists and minus-6. Despite his injury, Galchenyuk was ranked fourth amongst North American skaters in Central Scouting's final rankings prior to the 2012 NHL Draft.
Talent Analysis
Many scouts felt that Galchenyuk was more talented overall than his Sarnia Sting teammate, Nail Yakupov. Galchenyuk may not be the natural goal-scorer that Yakupov is, but he has good hands and the ability to see and make plays that the average player may not be able to conjure up. Galchenyuk also pays attention to the defensive side of the game, moreso than does Yakupov. In time, Galchenyuk should be a contender to be a No. 1 center with the Canadiens.
Future
The knee injury has lagged his development for this past year and it might be better for Galchenyuk to play the upcoming season in the OHL. If he continues his hard work and gains more strength over the summer then the 18-year-old centerman might make the Canadiens' decision to send him back a lot more difficult.
