Benoit played for Canada in the Under 18 Championships in 2001. Attended Toronto’s rookie camp in 2003.

Benoit won the Leo Lalonde Memorial Trophy as the OHL’s overage player of the year for the 2004-05 season. He led all OHL blueliners with 24 goals and 53 assists for 77 points in 67 games. He was tied for sixth among all OHL players with a +36 plus/minus rating. Benoit recorded 19 multiple point games this season, including four-point efforts against the Owen Sound Attack on October 29 and on January 8 against the Saginaw Spirit. Benoit was named OHL Defenseman of the Month three times this season and was named to the OHL’s First All-Star Team.
