At the dawn of the 2014-15 season, the Leafs featured a number of skilled forward prospects who were looking to either build on past success or transition to the next level of hockey. While most of this group consists of players small in stature, there were no major setbacks among their elite offensive forwards as they made successful transitions to the minor pro ranks or improved statistically over their previous season. Toronto Maple Leaf prospects playing for the AHL affiliate Toronto Marlies are undergoing a baptism by fire, and playing to mixed reviews. With a lineup that has iced 22 Maple Leafs prospects during the 2014-15 season, the Marlies’ season has been a roller coaster ride. Over the first 10 games, the Marlies finished with a respectable five wins and five losses. They subsequently went on a nine game losing streak that saw them score only 13 goals in that nine game span. They have begun to right the ship however and have a 7-1-2 record in their last 10 games.
It’s been a total upheaval in the standings in the AHL‘s Western Conference from last spring through the first third of the 2014-15 season. Two of the top four teams in the conference last season aren’t even in the top nine currently – Grand Rapids (9th) and Toronto (12th) – leaving the Western Conference wide open as teams head into the middle third of the schedule amidst the height of injuries and call-ups.
