History
2007-08: After playing midget hockey in Colorado, where he grew up, Levi moved to the Detroit area to play in the Compuware program. Played in 22 games for Compuware’s U-16 team and had 5 assists with 33 PIM. He was selected by Plymouth in the 6th round (110th overall) of the OHL draft.
2008-09: Levi spent most of the season with Compuware though he did make his OHL debut, playing in 12 regular season games and five playoff contests with the Whalers. In his 17 games with Plymouth, he had two assists and 9 PIM and was +4.
2009-10: Levi assumed a full-time role with Plymouth, appearing in 68 regular season games and scoring 3 goals with 9 assists with 116 PIM finishing +10. Was +2 in nine playoff games for the Whalers with 8 PIM.
2010-11: Levi doubled his offensive production in his second full OHL season with Plymouth while continuing to display the consistent, physical defensive play that drew the attention of Carolina scouts. Levi finished with 6 goals and 19 assists in 66 games for the Whalers including two scores on the power play. Levi's +16 plus/minus was second-best on the team and his 87 PMs were a reflection on his willingness to engage in physical play. In 11 playoff games, he scored 1 goal with 4 assists and was -2 with 8 PMs as Plymouth advanced to the second round before falling to eventual OHL champ Owen Sound.
Talent Analysis
Levi is a defensive defenseman with a big frame who enjoys the physical part of the game. Levi’s offensive play has been limited to this point. He is still a work in progress, having played just one season of junior hockey. Can make a sharp first pass to begin the transition from offense to defense but is inconsistent in his decision-making according to one scout.
Future
Levi is the tenth Plymouth Whaler to be drafted by the Hurricanes and the fourth in the last four years (Hurricanes owner Peter Karmanos also owns the Whalers). He will return to Plymouth for his second year of juniors after attending training camp with Carolina. Levi projects as a stay-at-home defenseman and has the large frame necessary to play that role. His game is still developing and as he continues to grow and train he should develop the strength and technical skills to be an effective shut down defender with a physical component to his play.
