History

2007-08: Played for Notre Dame of the Saskatchewan Midget AAA league.  Chosen in the first round of the 2008 QMJHL Draft by the Moncton Wildcats.

2008-09: In his QMJHL rookie season, Brandon Gormley appeared in 62 games for the Wildcats, scoring 7 goals and adding 20 assists for 27 points.  he was +9 for the season, and totaled 34 penalty minutes.  Gormley played in 10 playoff games for the Wildcats, netting 1 goal and adding 3 assists for 4 points.

2009-10: Played in 58 games for the Wildcats, scoring 9 goals and adding 34 assists for 43 points.  Registered a +31 rating while compiling 54 penalty minutes.  Played in 21 playoff games for the Wildcats, scoring 2 goals and adding 15 assists for 17 points to help the Wildcats win the QMJHL championship.   Played for Team Canada at the Ivan Hlinka Tournament, but missed the cut for the WJC Under-20 squad.  Played for Team Orr at the 2010 CHL Top Prospects Game.

2010-11: Gormley made his pro hockey debut as a 19-year-old, skating in four AHL games for San Antonio following a point-per-game season for the QMJHL's Moncton Wildcats. He had 1 goal and was -1 in limited action with the Rampage. Gormley was the leading scorer amongst defensemen for Moncton despite playing just 47 games due to an early season knee injury. That injury prevented Gormley from playing for Canada at the 2011 U20 World Junior Championship. With Moncton he scored 13 goals with 35 assists. Gormley's -16 plus/minus was troubling, but partially reflected him scoring 9 of his 13 goals on the power play. He finished with 42 PMs. Moncton advanced to the playoffs after finishing third in its division and in five playoff games Gormley was -2 with an assist and 6 PMs. He was named to the QMJHL Second All-Star team.

2011-12: Gormley had a memorable season — being named to the Memorial Cup All-Star team and winning a bronze medal with Canada at the 2012 U20 World Junior Championship. After attending camp with the Coyotes he returned to Moncton for a fourth season in the QMJHL. He scored 10 goals with 17 assists in 26 games with the Wildcats and was minus-9 with 18 assists. He and Canadiens' prospect Morgan Ellis were acquired by Shawinigan in mid-season to bolster the club's roster for the Memorial Cup – which the Cataractes hosted. He and had 5 assists and was plus-12 with 4 penalty minutes in nine games for the Cataractes before fracturing his ankle. Gormley returned during the QMJHL playoffs second round series with Chicoutimi and scored 5 goals with 2 assists; finishing with an even plus-minus and 8 penalty minutes in the seven-game series. The Cataractes, after nearly a month off, made amends for the playoff loss to Chicoutimi in the Memorial Cup,  defeating QMJHL champion Saint John's  in overtime in the championship game. Gormley scored 3 goals with 6 assists and was plus-nine with 6 penalty minutes in six Memorial Cup Games.  Gormley was an assistant captain for Canada at the WJC and was named the tournament's top defenseman — scoring 3 goals with 3 assists and finishing plus-four with 2 penalty minutes.

Talent Analysis

A talented two-way defenseman, Gormley provides skill, poise and leadership on the back-end. Although he is an all-around defenseman, Gormley is developing into an exceptional offensive player with lethal power-play skills. His ability as a distributor, his hard, accurate shot and strong in-zone work makes him one of the best defensive prospects in hockey.

Future

The 2010 first-round pick has the chance to crack the Coyotes roster in 2012-13. Projects to be someone who can play on the top pairing and the first power-play unit.

Although the lockout might cause some disappointment for Brandon Gormley and David Rundblad, two players on the cusp of full-time NHL duty, there is still the good news of them being able to further develop their high-level skills in the AHL. Gormley and Rundblad along with fellow Phoenix Coyotes prospects playing in the Europe, junior and the NCAA still have a full season ahead to prove their worth as prospects, regardless of the situation with the NHL.
