Arizona Coyotes General Manager Don Maloney being fired is one of the strangest stories of the post-season so far. The former Winnipeg franchise better known in recent years for city council controversies than on-ice success drifted back toward soap opera just when it seemed the hockey part was improving. Whoever replaces the veteran manager this summer owes him a phone call of thanks for helping to establish one of the league’s best prospect groups. Holding their own first round pick in the 2016 Draft, plus the New York Rangers’, means the team can bolster a good group even further.
Strong drafting and Don Maloney’s clever work over the phone – plus the presence of Oliver Ekman-Larsson – should have the Arizona Coyotes back into contention soon. The team in fact brought strong efforts for most of the 2015-16 season, but a playoff berth was asking a lot of this roster. The Hockey East quarterfinals are underway this weekend, and two familiar faces re-ignite a rivalry as Boston University and UMass Lowell meet in the Hockey East playoffs again just one year removed from meeting in the finals. The CHL’s regular season is winding down, and all three leagues are in action again as two top 2016 draft-eligibles get another last chance to impress before the draft. Finally, Jonathan Drouin’s infamous story will have a new chapter written in Syracuse as the Tampa Bay Lightning prospect is back in the AHL after an attempted trade request, finishing off a stacked edition of Prospect Faceoff.
