History
2009-10: Brendan Shinnimin was the leading scorer for Tri-City in his second WHL season as the Americans finished first in the U.S. Division and reached the WHL playoff finals. Shinnimin scored 27 goals with 55 assists in 70 games and was plus-11 with 82 penalty minutes during the regular season. The Americans advanced to the WHL championship series against the Calgary Hitmen and in 22 playoff games Shinnimin scored 8 goals with 17 assists and was plus-one with 29 penalty minutes. Despite his gaudy offensive numbers Shinnimin was not among the 210 North American skaters in Central Scouting's final rankings and was not selected in the 2010 NHL Draft.
2010-11: Shinnimin attended the New York Rangers prospect camp but was not signed to a contract. He returned to Tri-City and once again led the Americans in scoring – tying Regina's Jordan Weal (LAK) for fifth in the WHL with 96 points. He scored 34 goals with 62 assists and was plus-20 with 84 penalty minutes in 60 games. The Americans slipped to third behind Portland and Spokane in a competitive U.S. Division and lost to Spokane in a second round playoff series. Shinnimin scored 4 goals with 7 assists in ten playoff games and was an even plus/minus with 16 penalty minutes. He was named to the WHL West Second All-Star Team.
2011-12: Shinnimin attended the Coyotes training camp but was not signed to a contract. He returned to the WHL for an overage season and was named the CHL Player of the Year; leading the WHL in scoring and sharing the league's top plus/minus (plus-45) with Brandon's Mark Stone (OTT). One of three Tri-City players to top the 100-point mark, Shinnimin finished with 58 goals and 76 assists in 69 games and had 82 penalty minutes. He scored 21 of his 58 goals on the power play. Tri-City finished first in the U.S. Division and reach the playoff semifinals. Shinnimin scored 7 goals with 16 assists and was plus-seven with 28 penalty minutes in 15 playoff games. Shinnimin signed a three-year entry-level contract with Phoenix in March, 2012.
Talent Analysis
Shinnimin is a diminutive center who plays with skill and also has a chippy side to his game. He is a playmaker with great vision but can also use his speed and quickness to become a goal-scoring threat. Good faceoff man, can kill penalties and plays with an edge.
Future
After an incredible junior season in which he was named the CHL Player of the Year, Shinnimin will now see if his ability can translate to the pro game. It will be interesting to see if he is given an offensive role or more of a gritty, two-way role.
