History
Brett Hemingway completed his rookie season at the University of New Hampshire in 2003-04, where he saw playing time on the Wildcats’ “kid line” with fellow freshmen Daniel Winnik and Mark Kolanos. That season, Hemingway had 19 points (seven goals, 12 assists) in 34 games played. His 19 points ranked second on the team among all rookies in that category. He had his best outing of the season in the weekend home-and-home series versus Northeastern back on November 21st and 22nd, where he amassed three points (two goals, one assist). His performance that weekend also earned him his lone Hockey East Rookie of the Week honor of the season. His outstanding play throughout the season also earned Hemingway a spot on the Hockey East All-Rookie Team.
In 2005-06 he was part of one of the best line combinations in the nation with juniors Daniel Winnik (PHO) and Jacob Micflikier. In the month of November, the Wildcats ‘awesome threesome’ was on fire. Winnik was recently named Hockey East Player of the Month. Hemingway and Micflikier finished second and third respectively in league for the month. Hemingway posted three-point games twice during November. The first came back on November 12th in UNH’s 4-2 win over Maine and the second came last weekend in the 3-3 tie with Northeastern.
Prior to his arrival at New Hampshire, Hemingway played two seasons for the Coquitlam Express (BCHL). He led Coquitlam in scoring during the 2002-03 Season with 92 points (42 goals, 52 assists). In his first season with Coquitlam in 2001-02, Hemingway was named the BCHL’s Co-Rookie of the Year.
Hemingway is the younger brother of former Wildcat Colin Hemingway.
2003 NHL Draft, 7th round (225th overall) by Colorado
Talent Analysis
Hemingway is a player who possesses very good playmaking skills. He is also a good skater with good speed and acceleration. He moves well through traffic and is a real battler in puck pursuit situations. He doesn’t shy away from the physical aspects of the game and isn’t afraid to play the body. Hemingway follows plays well and possesses very good passing skills. His play around the net is also quite good. He can often times be found as the trailer on offensive rushes, picking up rebounds or parking himself at the side of the net to get tip-in chances. Hemingway has no problem shooting the puck and possesses a quick release. One area where Hemingway could improve in is his overall defensive game. While he has shown that he can play defense, he could stand to challenge opposing puck carriers more often.
