History
A ninth round pick, 291st overall by the Ottawa Senators, Brian Elliott was the second last player selected in the 2003 NHL draft. Elliott has played out his full college eligibility at the University of Wisconsin and will be a regular pro and likely starter for the Binghamton Senators in the AHL.
2002-03: Elliott played with the Ajax Axemen of the Ontario Provincial Junior “A” Hockey League. He played in 39 games for the Axemen with a 3.86 goals against average and a .903 save percentage in the highly offensive league. In the playoffs, Elliott posted a 3.62 GAA in 4 games. Not only was Elliot a star on the ice, but he was a Canadian Junior Ball Hockey All-Star as a goalie, which is an impressive accomplishment.
2003-04: Before going to university of Wisconsin, Elliott entered the NHL draft in 2003, and was selected. Elliott didn’t see much playing time in his first season at Wisconsin, but made the best of the few starts he did get. Playing in just six games, Elliott posted a 3-3-0 record with a very respectable 2.14 GAA and .912 save percentage.
2004-05: Elliott continued to be the Badgers second string goaltender behind Bernd Bruckler. His starts were few and far between but once again, Elliott made the most of his limited opportunities. In seven starts, a total of 390 minutes playing time all season, Elliott recorded a 3 shutouts and a 1.07 GAA with a .948 save percentage. His record was 5-1-1.
2005-06: Having put in his time as a backup goaltender, Elliott finally emerged and became the number one, and he did not disappoint. Playing in more than triple the games from his previous year, Elliott posted sensational numbers for a starter in the NCAA. In 27 games, his record was a spectacular 20-4-3 while his GAA was a miniscule 1.76 and save percentage tuning in at .931.
2006-07: In his final NCAA season, Elliott continued to shine and show his potential. The Badgers struggled more than in previous seasons and Elliott’s record suffered as a result (12-16-2 in 31 games). But Elliott was far from one of the Badgers’ problems. In fact, Elliott was one of the few bright spots and a main reason Wisconsin was not a bottom feeder. Four of Elliott’s 12 victories came by way of shutout and his GAA at season’s end was a highly respectable 2.15 while his save percentage checked in at .921. After the Badgers’ season ended, Elliott signed a try-out contract with Binghamton and started his first four professional games. Playing in eight matches, Elliott posted a 3-4-0 record with a 4.24 GAA and a .886 save percentage.

Talent Analysis
At 6’3, Elliott is a big goaltender who covers a lot of net, and has bulked up somewhat, but could still add on some more muscle. He is a player who works hard, has an outstanding attitude, plays with lots of enthusiasm and is a great student of the game. Elliott’s best attribute is his outstandingly quick reflexes. He moves well laterally and solid on his angles. He has shown great composure under fire and a willingness to challenge shooters. One attribute that Elliott possesses that is very noticeable when watching him closely is his tremendous ability to make difficult kick saves. Elliott is nearly unbeatable on the first shot and his fundamentals are well above average. A butterfly style goaltender, Elliott is patient and extremely capable lateral mover. If there is a weakness to Elliott’s game aside from his inexperience, it is in the area of rebound control. He’ll make initial saves, but has shown difficulty in corralling loose pucks when opposing players are in the vicinity, particularly in the slot area. He also struggles with following the puck in traffic areas and at times, off speed shots seem to throw him off.
Future
Eliott is a big and athletic goaltender who could pay off down the road. After an impressive college career, Elliott will get a chance to be a number one at the AHL level with Binghamton. Elliott could be a very valuable ninth round pick and is likely to become a dependable back up. However, his terrific attitude and competitive nature, along with excellent leadership qualities make him a strong darkhorse candidate to land a starter position later in his career.
