The 2015-16 season has been a season of optimism for the Islanders faithful. The organization has now made the playoffs in consecutive seasons for the first time since the 2004-05 lockout and advanced to the second round for the first time since 1993.
After finishing in the basement of the AHL standings over the past few seasons, the New York Islanders AHL affiliate has found success this year and currently sits third in the Atlantic Division. The New York Islanders prospect pool remains one of the stronger ones in the NHL. There are high-upside players and depth at every position. The Islanders have been able to stock the system with four first-round picks in the past two drafts. With these picks, they have taken four forwards: Michael Dal Colle, Josh Ho-Sang, Mathew Barzal, and Anthony Beauvillier. They are all tremendously skilled and represent the next wave of forward prospects for the Islanders. The American Hockey League has switched its conference format for the 2015-16 season as there are now two divisions in each conference. In the Eastern Conference, it’s now the Atlantic and North Divisions – with the Manchester Monarchs, Worcester Sharks and Norfolk Admirals no longer AHL franchises. All three have re-located west as the league has added five teams in California as part of the AHL’s western expansion. Read more»
The second NHL Draft for the Toronto Maple Leafs under President and General Manager Brian Burke saw the team make seven selections in the draft, however only two of the picks were originally theirs. In a whirlwind of activity, Burke traded five of their original picks and re-acquired five in a series of player trades and transactions to move the Leafs up or down in the draft.
