History
History: Borer plays at St. Cloud State University. During the 2002-03 season, Borer played for the US National Team Development Program (USNTDP) where he had six points (two goals, four assists) in 49 games played. He has participated in the USA Hockey’s Select-15 Festival. Borer was also represented the United States at the IIHF U-18 World Junior Tournament in Russia in 2003.
2004-05: The St. Cloud State sophomore is already beginning to look like an excellent third round selection. The defensive defenseman has become a reliable blueliner while chipping in 11 assists in 35 games. He’s one of the team’s most improved players this season and excels at taking his man out of the play. Borer was also picked to represent the US at the World Juniors and was often matched up against the opposing team’s top lines. His even plus/minus was tied for third best on the team, and Ferguson noted how pleased he was with Borer’s WJC.
2005-06: As a junior he was captain and the No. 1 defensive-defenseman on the squad. Borer chipped in with some offense for St. Cloud as he had three goals and eight assists in 42 games. However, again, it’s his ability to shut down top offensive opponents that is his greatest asset.
2006-07: The St. Cloud senior has been the backbone of the Huskies defense. This season, captain Borer had two goals, nine assists, and 15 minor penalties in 40 games for the second best team in the WCHA based on standings. Borer led one of the best defensive units in all of college hockey this season, and he should be able to ease into the pro game with no problems. Signed to an entry level contract in May of 2007.
2007-08: Borer impressed in his first full pro season, notching six goals and 13 assists in 61 games with Carolina’s AHL affiliate in Albany. But the young defenseman really opened eyes during his 11 games with the Hurricanes. Borer showed intriguing offensive upside, getting some power play time during his time in Raleigh, and also showed a knack for timely recovery in the defensive zone. Unfortunately, Borer’s season was cut short by a knee injury that cost him the end of the regular season and the River Rats’ seven playoff games.
Talent Analysis
Borer is a defensive defenseman with very good size. Despite his lack of offensive production, he shows remarkable confidence with the puck. He also has the ability to make good outlet passes. He is solid positionally and his skating is good. He sees the ice and follows plays very well. He is good in one-on-one situations and can contain opposing players quite well. His play along the boards is also quite good. Borer doesn’t shy away from the physical play and can deliver solid checks. One area he could use improvement in is clearing bodies in front of the net.
Future
Borer has a bright future in Carolina. With Carolina reshaping their blueline with the acquisition of Joni Pitkanen, Borer’s focus for the immediate future will be on getting his knee healthy and further developing into an all-around rearguard. As long as he’s healthy, Borer will likely serve as the team’s first defensive call-up for the 2008-09 season.
