History

2007-08: Lalonde-McNicoll was One of the top scorers in the QMHL for Shawinigan with 43 goals and 40 assists. He scored 18 goals on the power play and had six game winners in 69 games to lead the Cataractes. In five playoff games, he was held goal-less by Gatineau but had 8 assists in 5 games. Named the winner of the league's Frank J. Selke trophy (Most Gentlemanly Player).

2008-09: After attending the Pittsburgh Penguins camp but not being offered a contract, Lalonde-McNicoll returned to Shawinigan. He was the third-leading scorer in the QMJHL, scoring 38 goals with 66 assists and was +61 in 65 games during the regular season. Shawinigan, after finishing second in the Central Division during the regular season, enjoyed a story book run through the playoffs before falling to Drummondville in a seven game series in the QMJHL Finals. In 21 playoff games, Lalonde-McNicoll scored 16 goals with 17 assists and was +12 with 6 PIM. He was particularly lethal on the power play, scoring seven times. Signed an entry level contract with Colorado following the season.

2009-10: Lalonde-McNicoll spent most of the year with the AHL Lake Erie Monsters before the tradeline deal which sent him to the Carolina organization along with a Sixth round pick in 2010 for veterans Stephane Yelle and Harrison Reed. He scored 5 goals with 8 assists in 45 games with the Monsters. In seven games with the Hurricanes' Albany affiliate, he scored twice with no assists. Lalonde also spent time in the ECHL with both Charlotte and Florida. In eight regular season games between the two teams, he scored 2 goals with 6 assists and was even with no PIM. He finished the season playing with Florida in the ECHL playoffs. In six game, he had 2 assists and was -3.

2010-11: Lalonde-McNicoll, acquired in a trade with Colorado the previous season, split his first pro season in the Hurricanes' organization between Charlotte (AHL) and ECHL Florida. He opened the season with Florida, suffering an injury in October that forced him to miss nearly two months of the season. He made his debut with Charlotte in January and had points in 4 of his first five games before being sent back to Florida. He had two other call-ups with Charlotte and in 15 regular season games with the Checkers he scored 6 goals with 8 assists and was +1 with 2 PMs. Four of his six goals came on the power play. He was not a part of the Checkers' playoff roster and didn't see any post season action. In 29 ECHL games with the Everblades he scored 7 goals with 17 assists and was +5 with 8 PMs.

Talent Analysis

Lalonde-McNicoll went undrafted despite putting up phenomenal offensive numbers in juniors because of his size and the perception that he is a perimeter player who stays away from tight areas and does not have the physical strength needed at the pro level. Another factor not in his favor is his speed, which is only average as compared to other players his size who have been successful at the pro level. His playmaking ability and offensive instincts are exceptional - and are enough to intrigue the Avalanche and now Hurricane organizations. Is also strong on face-offs.

Future

Lalonde-McNicoll will get a fresh start in the Carolina organization, but will have to prove himself in camp and, most likely, with Charlotte in the AHL. Long-term, Lalonde-McNicoll faces the challenge that confronts players who've put up big offensive numbers in Quebec - he must prove that he can play a two-way game and compete in small areas after playing a more wide-open, offense-first game in the QMJHL. Of the seven players who scored 90 or more points when Lalonde-McNicoll had 104 points in 2008-09, only three (Nick Petersen, Mike Hoffman, and Paul Byron) were drafted and none earlier than the fourth round of their respective draft years.
