History
2008-09: Chris Wideman enjoyed an outstanding freshman campaign as a member of the Miami RedHawks team that went all the way to the national championship game this past April. He appeared in 39 games this season posting 26 assists, which led the team. Wideman also led Miami with a plus-11. His stellar season earned him a spot on the CCHA All-Rookie team. Most recently, Wideman was invited to the upcoming U.S. National Junior Evaluation Camp in Lake Placid, NY for the 2010 World Junior Championships.
2009-10: Wideman skated in all 44 games for Miami as a sophomore as the RedHawks captured the CCHA regular season title and advanced to the Frozen Four. He had a +18 plus/minus and scored 5 goals with 17 assists and 63 PMs. Miami defeated arch-rival Michigan in an epic, two overtime game in the NCAA Midwest Region Final to reach the Frozen Four.
2010-11: Wideman played all 39 games for Miami as a junior and was the leading scorer among defensemen for the RedHawks with 3 goals and 20 assists. He was +8 with 32 PMs for Miami, which defeated Western Michigan in the CCHA Championship game after finishing third in the league during the regular season.
2011-12: Wideman skated in 41 games for Miami University as a senior, being joined by his younger brother Alex, a freshman forward. He was the leading scorer amongst Redhawks defensemen with 4 goals and 24 assists and was plus-22 with 40 penalty minutes; scoring 3 of his 4 goals on the power play. Miami finished fourth in the CCHA and earned an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament after winning the league's third place game. Wideman suffered a season-ending upper body injury that prevented him from joining AHL Binghamton following the college season in Miami's overtime NCAA tournament loss to Massachusetts-Lowell. He signed a two-year entry-level contract with Ottawa in March, 2012.
Talent Analysis
Wideman is an intelligent, excellent puck-moving defenseman on the small side. He is very poised and patience with the. He also distributes and makes smart decisions with the puck too. One of Wideman’s best attributes is his smart and effective use of his stick, particularly in taking away passing/shooting lanes. He possesses a very shot and can get pucks to the net. Wideman is a very good skater with good foot speed that transitions remarkably well. Though he isn’t overly physical, Wideman will play the body when necessary. Wideman is positionally sound, but his small stature and especially lack of strength make it difficult for him to contain bigger opposing forwards. As Wideman gets stronger that part of his game should improve.
Future
Wideman has signed a two-year, entry-level contract with the Senators and will begin his pro career, most likely in the AHL with Binghamton.
