History

2008-09: Ferreiro skated in 27 games for The Governor's Academy in Massachusetts as a junior. He scored 10 goals with 10 assists and had 87 PMs. Ferriero committed to playing college hockey at Boston College in 2010-11.

2009-10: Ferriero had a stellar draft year, scoring 21 goals with 19 assists in 27 games at The Governor’s Academy. Ferriero was ranked 117th amongst North American skaters in Central Scouting's final rankings and was selected by San Jose in the fifth round (127th overall) in the 2010 NHL Draft. Cody's older brother Benn was signed by the Sharks as a free agent in 2009.

2010-11: Ferriero de-committed from attending Boston College, his brother Benn's alma mater, and instead played for Beanpot and Hockey East rival Northeastern. He skated in 34 games as a freshman, playing alongside fellow Sharks draftees Drew and Justin Daniels. Ferriero scored 4 goals with 3 assists and was +1 with 38 PMs. The Huskies finished sixth in Hockey East and lost to defending national champion Boston College in the Hockey East semifinals, finishing 14-16-8 for the year.

2011-12: Ferriero was having an excellent sophomore year on the top line for Northeastern before he underwent surgery for a torn Meniscus in his knee and missed the second half of the season. He had doubled his offensive numbers of his freshman year by scoring nine goals (one power play, two GWG) along with six assists and a good plus 15 rating in only 17 NCAA games.

Talent Analysis

Ferriero is a natural scorer who is smart enough to let his linemates carry the puck up the ice and find the little soft spots in the defensive zone coverage where he can get off his quick, hard accurate release. The quick skating centerman needs to play a little more physically down low in both end of the rink to have more success.

Future

To get back to the same level play, Ferriero needs to work hard strengthening his injured knee and get back to skating as soon as possible. The junior sniper should put up excellent number this coming season if he can stay healthy for the whole year at Northwestern.

Tomas Hertl leads San Jose Sharks’ prospects poised for big 2012-13 seasons

The San Jose Sharks finished the 2011-12 season with arguably the worst prospect pool in the entire NHL. This has been a familiar trend within the Sharks organization over the past few seasons as they have looked to contend in the Western Conference and have sacrificed some of their future to do so. Despite the lack of top-tier talent, the Sharks’ prospect pipeline has become something of a well-oiled machine; year after year lesser known, unheralded players go in, and well-developed, NHL-ready talent comes out. The Sharks head into the 2012-13 season with a strong batch of relative unknowns, hoping to silence the critics.

The San Jose Sharks have improved the team's organizational depth with the addition of their 2012 NHL Draft selections, but it could take four to five years to see the results. Three of the team's six new draftees have high skill levels at this stage of their development and made this edition of the Sharks' Top 20 list. Newly-drafted Tomas Hertl has replaced Freddie Hamilton as the number one prospect in the San Jose Sharks organization.

The San Jose Sharks have seen some of their prospects demonstrate solid development over the 2011-12 season while others have been seemingly stuck in neutral. Benn Ferriero and Justin Braun have graduated since the last Top 20 list while others such as Taylor Doherty, Harri Sateri, Nick Petrecki, and Brandon Mashinter have seen their stock decline over the season. The organization signed several quality free agents this spring including Travis Oleksuk, Matt Tennyson, and Sebastien Stalberg.
