History

With their second consecutive pick in the third round, the Predators decided to bulk up their defense once more selecting Cody Franson from the Vancouver Giants of the WHL. Franson was named the Most Improved Player by the Vancouver Giants organization for the 2004-05 season.

Franson was coming off his first full season of junior hockey. He had only played a total of five WHL games the past two seasons and three games in the BCHL for the Trail Smoke Eaters. Franson played 64 games for Vancouver in 2004-05 recording 13 points (2 goals, 11 assists). Franson is a disciplined player taking only 44 penalty minutes in those games.

2006-07: This would be the D-man’s final season with the Vancouver Giants (WHL) and it was one of his most successful to date. In 59 games he racked up 51 points (17g+34a) and finished with a +7 rating. He played well in the postseason, recording three goals and four assists in 19 games. He was honored with WHL West First All-Star Team and Memorial Cup Tournament All-Star Team honors.

2007-08: Franson’s first season of AHL action proved to be a learning experience but impressive at the same time. In 76 games with the Milwaukee Admirals (AHL) he scored 11 goals and 25 assists. He notched several multi-point games this season and helped with a five-game point streak in the beginning of February.

Talent Analysis

At 6-4, 205 pounds, Franson has the height and weight to compete.  He is a good skater and has offensive ability.

Future

Because the Predators are so strong organizationally at the position, it has been difficult for him to advance. It is only a matter of time though before you see this skilled defenseman in the NHL.
