History
In his four-year career back stopping for the Colorado College Tigers, McElhinney had success both individually and as a member of the team he tended. In 90 career WCHA starts McElhinney posted a record of 62-15-8. In 26 appearances in his senior year, McElhinney had a record of 21-4-1 with a 2.24 GAA and a .922 save%. He was also named WCHA Goalie of the Year and was named to the WCHA First All-Star Team as well as the NCAA West First All-American Team. That same year the Tigers made an appearance at the NCAA Frozen Four, but would lose to in the Semi-finals to the eventual national champions from the University of Denver.
McElhinney’s professional hockey league career began in 2005 with Calgary’s AHL farm club in Omaha. In 33 appearances McElhinney had a forgettable record of 9-14-2 with a 2.52 GAA. His next season in Omaha was a completely different story, as after 57 games the 6’2” net minder had a record of 35-17-1 and the leagues second best GAA of 2.13. McElhinney was also selected to play in 2007 AHL All-Star game in Toronto where he suited up for the Team Canada All-Stars.
2007-08: The London, Ontario, product made his Calgary Flames debut on Oct. 22, 2007, and four more appearances since then. The bulk of his time has been spent with the Quad City Flames.

Talent Analysis
The 24 year old McElhinney has above average size and uses it well, but must continue to develop his mobility and work on controlling his rebounds to be a reliable number two option for the Calgary Flames.
Future
If the Flames decide to re-up with Joseph, McElhinney may have to bide his time in the AHL.
