Daniel Manzato

Prospect Grade: 6.5 C  (About Prospect Grades)

History

Daniel Manzato was drafted by the Victoriaville Tigers in the CHL draft and decided to make the jump to North America in 2001-02. He was recommended by Anaheim Mighty Ducks’ goalie coach Francois Allaire, who knows him from the annual goalie camp in Verbier that is held in July. Allaire says that Manzato is as good as four-time Stanley Cup winner Patrick Roy at his age. He is from the same town as his idol David Aebischer (Fribourg), and has a same sort of style like Aebischer (or Roy).

In 2000-01 he trained with the first team of Fribourg-Gottéron, where he was already tending the net for in the junior team while also playing some games for 1.liga (3rd level) farm team Düdingen. The fact that Fribourg-Gottéron relegated from the highest junior division wasn’t to be blamed on Manzato though. But it’s obvious he isn’t yet having the consistency of a more experienced goalie. His highlight in 2001 was clearly the silver medal at the WJC under 18 in Lahti and Helsinki, Finland. Manzato was the back-up goalie there behind EHC Chur’s Tobias Stephan, another 2002 draft eligible player, and only saw ice time in the round robin game vs the USA (1-3).

5th Round - 160th Overall, 2002 Entry Draft, by Carolina

2005-06:. He fared well in the Swiss league, earning a 16-14-9 record with a 2.63 goals against average. On May 31, 2006, the Hurricanes signed Manzato, with the stipulation that he could play in Europe again in 2006-07

2006-07:  this year he and his team have struggled, and Manzato had a 13-30 record, appearing in 43 of Basel’s 44 games. He had a 3.50 GAA, but did have two shutouts. They placed last in the 12-team league.

Talent Analysis

He is a big butterfly goalie with good quick reflexes. Manzato is showing an enormous will to improve his game and is eager to work hard to get better. At every practice he wants to come out better and he sets himself higher goals every time. He’s also very self-critical, always looking for the mistake on his end before pointing fingers at others. Off the ice though he’s a very shy and silent person, he seems to ‘blossom’ when he’s on the ice.
