History

2007-08: Played with Skelleftea's U20 team, registering 26 points in 35 games. Competed with the U18 WJC squad.

2008-09: Played for Skelleftea in the SEL, posting 10 assists in 45 games. Represented silver medal winning Sweden in the 2009 WJC.  Drafted by the St. Louis Blues in the first round of the 2009 NHL Draft.

2009-10: Started with Skellefteå J20, scoring 4 points in 3 games before making the big club and playing 47 games with. In his time there, David Rundblad would score 1 goal and 12 assists with Skellefteå. He would also play a role with Sweden’s Bronze Medal Team at the World Juniors, scoring 5 points in 6 games.

2010-11: Rundblad would be acquired via trade in the 2010 draft for the 16th overall pick in 2011. He would go on to register 11 goals and 50 points in 55 games. When asked about Rundblad, Ottawa GM Bryan Murray had this to say: "When we traded for him, we knew that he was a good player. We gave up a first-round pick wondering if we could get that good a player in the draft last year and we felt we couldn’t. He went back and he played extremely well. He’s a high-skill guy. I think the fact that he was able to play where he played was great. The other thing we knew is that he was going to play for Anders Forsberg, who had scouted for us prior to that. We knew he was going to get lots of ice time, lots of development and, obviously, he did a heck of a job."

2011-12: Rundblad made his NHL debut with the Senators, playing primarily bottom-pairing minutes. He was traded to the Phoenix Coyotes in mid-December for center Kyle Turris.

2011-12: Rundblad made his NHL debut with the Senators, playing primarily bottom-pairing minutes. He was traded to the Phoenix Coyotes in mid-December for center Kyle Turris. In 24 games for the Senators he scored 1 goal with 3 assists and was minus-11 with 6 penalty minutes. Rundblad made his debut with the Coyotes in December and appeared in one other game before being demoted to AHL Portland in mid-January. He was re-called in March and played six games total with Phoenix; finishing with 3 assists and minus-one and averaging 14 minutes of ice time. He was with the Coyotes for the playoffs but did not appear in any games. In 30 games with Portland he scored 7 goals with 9 assists and was minus-18 with 27 penalty minutes.

Talent Analysis

Rundblad is an offensive minded defenseman with good size and excellent skills. He has good vision and carries the puck with confidence. A top notch player on the power-play, Rundblad’s best attribute is his ability to distribute the puck quickly and efficiently while also being able to launch a hard point shot.  Rundblad's defensive game remains a work in progress and must continue to improve.

Future

Will be in the mix for full time duty with the Coyotes, but may have to prove himself further in the AHL. Offensive ability is NHL quality but he must become more reliable in his own zone.

With the Pirates recently clinching a playoff spot, these prospects will gain valuable post-season experience early on in their careers.

The 31-40 spots in Hockey’s Future’s Top 50 prospect rankings feature players who were all ranked in the Spring edition, though many saw a great deal of movement from their previous spots. The 2012 NHL Draft can be partially to blame for some of the prospects moving down the list, as there are numerous new faces at the top of the rankings, but two players in particular, Mark Scheifele (WPG) and David Rundblad (PHX) saw a dramatic drop from their previous spots.
