2008-09: Played for Duluth East and some with the USNTDP Under-17 team that competed in the NAHL.
2009-10: Derek Forbort played for the US NTDP Under-18 team that competed in the USHL. In 26 league games, Forbort scored 4 goals and added 10 assists for 14 points. All told, Forbort played in 65 games for the NTDP squad, scoring 5 goals and adding 23 assists for 28 points.
2010-11: Forbort skated in 38 of 44 games for WCHA regular season and playoff champion North Dakota as a freshman; missing time and battling the effects of mononucleosis in mid-season. Paired with junior Ben Blood (OTT) on the Fighting Sioux' shut-down pairing for much of the year, he finished the season with a +21 plus/minus with 15 assists and 26 PMs. North Dakota reached the Frozen Four after defeating WCHA runner-up Denver in the Midwest Regional Final; falling to Michigan, 2-0, in a semifinal game. Forbort was with the bronze medal-winning USA team at the 2011 U20 World Junior tournament – with no points or penalties in six games.
2011-12: Forbert played much of the season on the top defensive pairing as a sophomore for North Dakota alongside Senators' prospect Ben Blood — missing time mid-season due to a knee injury suffered while representing the USA at the 2012 U20 World Junior Championship. He scored 2 goals with 11 assists in 35 games and was plus-two with 28 penalty minutes. The Fighting Sioux defeated Denver in the WCHA championship game after finishing fourth in the regular season and advanced to the NCAA West Regional final against Minnesota. In three games for the USA, which finished seventh at the WJC, he had 2 assists and was an even plus/minus before being hurt.
Exceptional decision-making. Has the size and skating and is very agile. Doesn't like to carry the puck, but his passes are laser sharp. He could stand to add a bit of grit to his game.
