History

His star shined at the World Junior Championships in 1999. Just 16 years old, he was the No. 1 goalie in the german U-18 national team. He played for the Kölner Haie junior team and their farm team at the 4th league, and the next season with the farmteam from the Kölner Haie, but after six games the pro team called him up. After 11 games on the bench team manager Lance Nethery signed him to the Erding Jets, second league. He thought Pätzold was in his young age too good for the fourth league, he needed ice time in a higher league. And in the first games he showed his big talent with some sensational reflexes.

2003-04: Split the 2003-04 season between the Cleveland Barons of the AHL and the Johnstown Chiefs of the ECHL. He played 27 games with the Barons with a goals against average of 2.88 and a save percentage of .915.

2004-05: Pätzold split time in the net with Nolan Schaefer for the Cleveland Barons and finished the season with an 18-16-5 record. The 22-year-old had a respectable 2.58 goals-against average and a .911 save percentage, and was named the Barons Player of the Week three times during the season.

2005-06: A knee injury suffered in early December kept Pätzold out of action with the Barons for nearly a month, but he still managed to play in 33 games on the season. The netminder had a 10-21-0 record for a struggling Barons team, along with a .869 save percentage and a 3.97 goals-against average.

Talent Analysis

His coolness and his reflexes are his best attributes. Has very good skating skills and good reaction time. Overall, Pätzold is technically sound, and when he’s on his game, he’s tough to beat. At times, consistency has been a problem for Pätzold, but the former German World Junior Championship starting goalie can shut down opponents.

Future

While he hasn’t been terrible this season, he has been inconsistent, and with a full stable of goaltenders in their system, Patzold’s days with the Sharks organization may be numbered. He will need to amp up his effort if he’s to get a shot playing at the next level, but at this time, Patzold projects to be an NHL backup,
possibly more if he sees improvement in the next couple years.
