Dion Phaneuf

Prospect Grade: 9.0 A  (About Prospect Grades)

History

Phaneuf was a standout with the Red Deer Rebels and earned his way into the Top 10 of the very deep 2003 Entry Draft.

In the season following his ninth overall selection by the Calgary Flames, Phaneuf did nothing but improve his stock, whether it was by nearly making the team out of a camp--a camp that boasted a plethora of blueline talents--or the starring role he played on Canada's silver medal winning world junior team.

It is looking likely he will spend the 2004-05 season with the Rebels due primarily to the Flames blueline depth and the labour uncertainty surrounding the NHL.

Talent Analysis

A hard-nosed, hard hitting, no nonsense defender. Phaneuf has drawn many comparaisons to Scott Stevens not only for his physical play, but also as a result of his leadership.

Not known for his offensive abilities, Phaneuf is no slouch in the opponents zone. He has a good hard shot from the point and is a very smart player when it comes to knowing when to get involved and when to hang back.

Future

He plays the simple game well enough not to be a liability and has the talent to become something very special.
