History

2007-08: The Lewiston MAINEiacs (QMJHL) gave Gelinas a chance to play this season, and he proved to be a valuable asset to the team. The defender tallied 19 points (3g+16a) in 54 games.

2008-09: Gelinas improved upon his numbers from last season, recording 39 points (10g+29a) in 67 games. His second season with Lewiston also marked an increase in PIM, seeing the defender spend 80 minutes in the box.

2009-10: Began his season with Lewiston before a mid-season trade to Chicoutimi. He managed 31 points in 61 games between the two clubs, and appeared in 6 playoff games tallying 5 points.

2010-11: Gelinas finished the season with Memorial Cup-winning Saint John after being involved in a mid-season QMJHL trade deadline deal for the second year in a row. Gelinas scored 9 goals with 15 assists and was -10 with 41 PMs in 35 games for Chicoutimi prior to the trade with five of his nine goals coming on the power play. In 27 games for Saint John after the trade, he scored 3 goals with 17 assists and 26 PMs and was +25 on a team that finished first in the Maritimes Division and had the league's best record. In 19 playoff games during the Sea Dogs' run to the President's Trophy, Gelinas scored 5 goals with 8 assists and was +10 with 25 PMs. In 4 games at the Memorial Cup tournament he had 1 assist with 4 PMs.

Talent Analysis

Gelinas is blessed with a tantalizing size/skill combination and is still learning how to harness it all as there is still some rawness to his game at times, much of which can be traced to the fact that he is a converted forward. A strong skating, mobile defenseman, Gelinas loves to lead the rush up the ice and involve himself offensively. He also has a bomb of a slap-shot. His defense and physical play is still a work in progress, but he has taken great strides in both of those areas since being drafted.

Future

Absolutely loaded with upside, Gelinas is not a finished product just yet and will need a few years of pro seasoning before being ready to challenge for an NHL job. He has more boom-bust potential than others in the system, but should he reach his full potential, it would be as a mid-pairing defenseman capable of contributing on the power-play.
