Signed with Dallas as an undrafted free agent at the age of 23 after emerging as one of the best young left wings in all of the SEL during the 2007-08 season.
2006-07: Brunnstrom, who was a veritable nobody on the international scope, burst onto the scene with Division 1’s Borås HC (SWE – 2) where he netted 37 goals and 73 points in just 41 games to lead the league. Brunnstrom carried the team (to promotion into Allsvenskan) and carried home many Division 1 awards that year.
2007-08: Brunnstrom moved on to Färjestad of the Elitserien for the first time in his career and got off to a hot start. However, as more attention was paid to him later in the season, he trailed off a bit in his production but finished with nine goals and a team-leading 28 assists in 54 games. He continued his slump into the playoffs, notching just a single point in 12 games. Despite interest from many NHL clubs, the Dallas Stars signed him to a two-year entry-level contract.
Brunnstrom is a solid, all-around offensive threat. He has very good speed and uses his body well to protect the puck. He has a good, hard shot and has the potential to score goals in bunches. He is also a pretty creative playmaker with good vision and can pull an unexpected move/pass from his bag of tricks. Has intriguing upside without the puck as well, could become a backchecker in the Marian Hossa mold if he excels in North America. Needs to respond well to the pressures of the NHL and of big games in general.
