History
Schutz was one of few Germans to be playing in the Canadian Hockey League, and was one of the best, though he did not get much exposure, playing for the expansion Saint John Sea Dogs. Schutz was selected 41st overall in the 2005 Import Draft. He showed great talent for the young and inexperienced squad, posting 52 points in 65 games, leading the team in assists and points, and finishing second in goals. He was also a member of Germany’s World Junior squad, playing in the first division, where he picked up four points in five games.
October 2006 Q&A with Schutz
2005-06: A breakout year for the center, Schutz recorded career highs in goals (21), assists (31) and points (52) in his first season in North America.
2006-07: Schutz was traded to Val-d’Or from St. John in the QMJHL. He scored 11 points in 18 games for St. John and recorded 33 regular season points in 27 games and 15 playoff points for Val-d’Or after the trade.
2007-08: After two seasons in the QMJHL, Schutz returned home to play in the German Elite League (DEL). Schutz finished eighth in team scoring with 25 points and 76 penalty minutes in 46 games last season with ERC Ingolstadt. He was named the league’s Rookie of the Year and was the youngest player on ERC Ingolstadt. He represented Germany in the 2007 World Junior Championships and the 2007 World Championships.
Talent Analysis
Schutz has steadily developed into a respectable prospect at center. He has a compact frame, with good strength and a willingness to go into the corners. As a smooth skater, he has the ability to put his teammates in the position to score, and can chip in himself with a quick wrist shot.
Future
After agreeing to an entry-level contract in May 2008, Schutz will have the opportunity to prove himself at the AHL level in Portland.
