The Dallas Stars organization is brimming with potential in their minor pro ranks. With many recent draft picks graduated from the junior and collegiate ranks, their AHL club is practically overflowing with potential. As a result, the junior and collegiate ranks are a little short on upside, but the proximity of their best and brightest is promising and exciting for management and fans alike.
Movement abounds in the newest Dallas Stars Top 20 list. The acquisitions of Mattias Backman, Mattias Janmark and, most recently, Stephen Johns all make their respective impacts while two 2015 draft picks make the list as well. Meanwhile, three defensemen graduate the prospects list for regular NHL duty: John Klingberg, Jamie Oleksiak and Jyrki Jokipakka. The Stars also bid adieu to Ludwig Karlsson and 2009 top ten pick Scott Glennie, neither of whom received a qualifying offer.
It has been a trying year for many in the Stars’ minor league affiliates. In the AHL the high amount of roster turnover and personnel changes has left Texas a lesser group than the Calder Cup champions of a year ago. Derek Laxdal is struggling to get ideal hockey out of this group and the frustration has been evident at times. Many prospects have not taken major steps forward in the first half of the season, but as adaptation occurs, the potential still exists for this talented group to emerge.
The churning out of quality prospects continues for the Dallas Stars organization. General manager Jim Nill will be looked upon to continue to bolster a very strong and deep organizational depth chart that has few glaring weaknesses at this point in time. With the Texas Stars (AHL) contingent set to defend a title and the Dallas team looking to make a bigger playoff push, the pressure is on this impressive group of youngsters.
