History
2006-07: Played his junior season for Brother Rice H.S. in Birmingham, Michigan. He was the Warriors team captain and made All-State honorable mention. Selected by the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders in the 3rd round of the 2006 USHL Entry Draft with the 28th overall pick. In January 2007, the Ohio Jr. Blue Jackets acquired Pateryn from the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders in exchange for forward Danny Dries and a pick in the 2007 USHL Entry Draft.
2007-08: In his first season with the Ohio Junior Blue Jackets (USHL), Pateryn netted three goals and 27 points, but most impressive were his 145 penalty minutes.
2008-09: This marked the D-man’s first season with the University of Michigan, a 28 game rookie campaign that resulted in five assists and 32 minutes in the penalty box.
2009-10: Greg’s sophomore season saw him suit up for 33 games, registering a goal and 5 assists with the University of Michigan.
2010-11: Pateryn was one of the top shut-down defenders for the University of Michigan as a junior as the Wolverines advanced to the Frozen Four national championship game. Pateryn appeared in 40 of 44 games for the Wolverines and also contributed offensively – scoring 3 goals and 14 assists to go along with his defensive prowess. Pateryn finished with a +15 plus/minus for the Wolverines, who finished first in the CCHA regular season. After finishing third in the conference tournament, Michigan played some of its best hockey in the NCAA tournament, allowing just three goals in its first three NCAA contests, including a 2-0 shutout of high-powered North Dakota in the Frozen Four semifinals.
2011-12: Pateryn had an excellent senior season at the University of Michigan where the alternate captain scored two goals along 13 assists and a solid plus 15 rating in 41 NCAA games. The big physical defenseman was most definitely the anchor of the defense for the Wolverines where he partnered with sophomore, Mac Bennett (MTL) to form the team's shutdown pairing. Pateryn was unable to graduate from university with an NCAA or CCHA championship this season. The Wolverines suffered losses in the CCHA championship game to Western Michigan University and the opening round of the NCCA tournament to Cornell University.
Talent Analysis
Pateryn is a solid all-round defenseman who has a solid work ethic, grit, character and leadership skills along with strong defensive zone positioning and plays a tough physical game around his net. The big defenseman is a steady, calming presence on the backend and can play the shutdown role and on both specialty team units.
