History

2008-09: Griffin Reinhart played for the Hollyburn Huskies Midget T1 squad. He was chosen in the first round, 15th overall, of the 2009 WHL Bantam Draft by the Edmonton Oil Kings. Reinhart is the son of former NHL defenseman, Paul Reinhart, and the brother of Calgary Flames draftee, Max Reinhart.

2009-10: Reinhart played for the Vancouver NW Giants of the BCMML, scoring 9 goals and adding 25 assists for 34 points in 32 games. In 5 playoff games, Reinhart scored 3 goals and added 5 assists for 8 points. Reinhart saw his first WHL action, registering no points in 2 games for the Oil Kings.

2010-11: In his WHL rookie season, Reinhart played in 45 games for the Oil Kings. He scored 6 goals and added 19 assists for 25 points to go along with 36 penalty minutes. Reinhart registered no points in 4 playoff games. Reinhart played for Team Pacific at the 2011 World U-17 Hockey Challenge, scoring 1 goal and adding 6 assists for 7 points in 6 games for the bronze medal squad.

2011-12: Reinhart skated in 58 of 72 games for the Oil Kings in his second WHL season. Paired at times with 2010 first round pick Mark Pysyk (Buffalo), he scored 12 goals with 24 assists and was +23 with 38 PMs. The Oil Kings finished with the league's best record and face Portland in the WHL Finals. In the first 13 playoff games, Reinhart had 1 goal with 5 assists and was plus-10 with 18 PMs. In Central Scouting's final rankings prior to the 2012 NHL Draft he is ranked tenth amongst North American skaters.

2012-13: Reinhart was a team captain for the WHL's Edmonton Oil Kings and was a teammate of fellow Islanders prospect Ryan Strome for Team Canada at the 2013 World Junior Championship. Reinhart played 59 games for the Oil Kings; missing time for the WJC and when he attended Islanders camp in January. He scored 8 goals with 29 assists and was +30 with 35 penalty minutes. Edmonton advanced to the WHL finals against eventual Memorial Cup runner-up Portland. Reinhart was +5 and scored 3 goals with 4 assists in 12 playoff games, suffering a season-ending "lower body injury" in the Eastern Conference finals. Playing in a lower pairing role for fourth-place Canada in Ufa, Russia, he had 1 assist and was an even plus/minus with 8 penalty minutes in five games.

Talent Analysis

A defenseman with great size, budding talent, and good bloodlines, Reinhart appears to have rounded his game into form.  He has good hockey sense to go along with his size and ability and, while he doesn't excel in any one area of the game, he doesn't have many weaknesses, either.  Reinhart can work on his skating, and he could still make better use of his size.  His offensive game is not fully formed, but it improved as the 2011-12 season progressed.

Future

Reinhart is playing for the Edmonton Oil Kings of the WHL for the 2013-14 season.
