History
2009-10: Samuelsson skated for the Arizona-based PF Changs U-18 team. In 48 games he scored 27 goals with 36 assists. Samuelsson attended USA Hockey's National Team Development Camp in April and was offered a spot on the U17 team for 2010-11.
2010-11: Samuelsson played on both the U17 and U18 squads for the USA NTDP program and competed in both the U18 World Junior Championship and U17 World Hockey Challenge tournaments. In 16 games with the NDTP U18 squad he scored 3 goals with 4 assists and had 14 penalty minutes. Samuelsson was the U17 team's third-leading scorer despite appearing in just 38 games. He scored 12 goals with 16 assists and had a team-leading 98 penalty minutes. At the U18 World Junior Championship tournament, he had 1 assist and was minus-three with 4 penalty minutes in six games. The USA defeated Sweden in overtime in the championship game. Samuelsson was the leading scorer for USA's silver medal squad at the WHC and was third among all scorers in the tournament with 6 goals and 4 assists in six games.
2011-12: Samuelsson began the season with Sweden's MODO, where his father Ulf Samuelsson was the head coach of the Elitserien squad. He played in 15 games for the Elitserien club and 19 games for MODO's junior teams before returning to North America in January to play for the WHL's Edmonton Oil Kings. Samuelsson had 2 assists and was minus-seven with 12 penalty minutes while averaging 14:35 minutes of ice time for MODO. In 19 junior games between MODO's U20 and U18 clubs he scored 8 goals with 6 assist and had 30 penalty minutes. Samuelsson was a key offensive component for the WHL champion Oil Kings after joining the club and was Edmonton's leading scorer in the Memorial Cup. He scored 7 goals with 16 assists and was plus-18 with 42 penalty minutes in 28 regular season games. In 17 WHL playoff games he scored 4 goals with 10 assists and was plus-six with 20 penalty minutes. He was Edmonton's leading scorer at the Memorial Cup – scoring 2 goals with 3 assists – and was plus-one with 8 penalty minutes. The Oil Kings defeated host and eventual Memorial Cup champ Shawinigan in the opening game of the tournament but lost to the Cataractes in the tie-breaker game, 6-1. Samuelsson was invited to the NHL Draft Combine and was ranked 75th amongst North American skaters in Central Scouting's final rankings prior to the 2012 NHL Draft.
Talent Analysis
A big, powerful winger with some impressive physical attributes, Samuelsson has the tools to become a force as a power forward on the wing. On top of his size and strength he has good hands and can handle the puck with confidence on the rush. Also possesses a high hockey IQ, knowing the right places to be in both ends.
Future
With just one short WHL season under his belt, Samuelsson will return to the Edmonton Oil Kings where he will continue to establish himself as a big body presence with skill.
