History

Baranka is a strong defenseman from Slovakia. After playing with the WHL Everett Silvertips during the 2003-04 and 2004-05 seasons, Baranka made the leap to professional hockey in the fall of 2005. After two injury shortened seasons with the Hartford Wolf Pack, Baranka began this season as arguably the AHL team's number one defenseman. He played well to start the season and recently got a one game call-up to the NHL team. Back in Hartford, Baranka must continue to stay healthy to develop into the player has the potential to be.

Talent Analysis

Baranka is physical and possesses good speed, and puckhandling skills. ALthough he did not show much offensively in junior hockey, he has become an offensive threat over the past two seasons.  An above-average passer, he is solid in his own zone and is a regular on the Hartford power play.

Future

Baranka has the raw skills to be an NHL second pair defenseman. He needs to continue refining that skill, make consistently good decisions with the puck and stay healthy. If he does so, he may become a full-time NHLer next season.
