History
2004-05: As the youngest player on the Albany River Rats and one of the youngest players in the AHL, Khomutov didn’t see a lot of ice time during the 2004-05 season. He was a healthy scratch on more than one occasion, and when he played, he was often used as a fourth line center, seeing only a handful of shifts per game. Despite his limited playing time, Khomutov still put up six goals (including two game winners) and eleven assists.
2005-06: Khomutov’s second season in the AHL went a little smoother, but at times was still somewhat rocky. He did improve on all his numbers across the board, flashing bursts of offensive flair from time to time, but not on a consistent basis. In six fewer games than he played last season, Khomutov scored nine goals and 20 assists for 29 points.
2006-07: It was an interesting year to say the least for Khomutov. He returned to his native Russia to play before returning late in the year to the Devils ECHL affiliate in Trenton for five games and then suiting up in Lowell’s last regular season game.

Talent Analysis
Khomutov an impressive sized forward. Though he appears to be a natural center, he has experience playing on the wing. He has slowly started to use his frame to his advantage, and tends to be aggressive in fights next to the boards, though he usually avoids much contact in the open ice. He has a strong and accurate shot and possesses above average speed. His skating lacks some of the flare that will likely come along when he becomes more balanced in his large frame. His lateral movement is average, though still decent, considering his size.
Technically, Khomutov is an average player. He tends to use aggressive tactics and his sizable frame rather then finesse. However, he is a solid puck handler and can make some nice moves. He can make good decisions with the puck when he has it and is able to see the ice very well, finding his linemates. He has soft hands and can make a great pass, once he gets comfortable with his linemates and the system. He seems to enjoy combination hockey and setting up and tends to pass the puck often.
Khomutov is a natural center and with the role comes the defensive responsibility of a center, a.k.a., third defender on the ice. He fights hard for the puck next to the boards and makes a solid defensive effort. Despite the effort, though, his defensive capabilities are only average. He seems to be able to intercept a pass here or there, but he often hesitates to use his body in the open ice, trying to play the puck, not the body.
Future
Khomutov's long term future in the organization is in doubt after a season that saw him leave North America for Russia, but the return at the very end of the season. He is an offensively talented forward, but his overall desire and commitment are definitely in question. Where he will play the 2007-08 season is unknown at this point in time.
