After a promising 2002-03 season, Koltsov followed it up with well below the radar 2004-05.
Ivan Koltsov is a stay at home defenseman. At 6’2 and 191 pounds, Ivan has the potential to become a physical presence on the ice. He does not possess the natural tenacity you would like to see in your physical defenseman, but Ivan does have great hockey sense. As soon as he grows into his sizable frame and learns throw it around, all the pieces should fall in place. He already has many of the other pieces in place. Ivan is a strong skater with long strides and impressive mobility for a player of his size and age. He also has upper body strength and works hard at the boards. However, Ivan hesitates to land a strong hit, preferring to use his stick instead. Considering his spotty puck handling and physical potential, Ivan needs to learn to land the solid hits instead of tying up his opponents or using his stick. Ivan’s offensive upside is very small. Playing at the First League level of hockey, which is somewhat equivalent to the OHL, he only managed four points in 27 games.
Koltsov is no longer in the future plans of the Oilers and will be released if he hasn't been already.
