History
During his rookie season at the University of Wisconsin, Dowell had 19 points (3 goals, 16 assists) in 37 games played. He was named WCHA Rookie of the Week for two consecutive weeks (November 10th and 17th) for his outstanding performances in the weekend series between Michigan Tech and University of Minnesota respectively. He was a member of the gold medal winning USA squad at the 2004 IIHF World Junior Championships (WJC) in Finland earlier this year. Dowell spent the previous two seasons with the U.S. National Team Development Program in Ann Arbor, Michigan. He served as an assistant captain on the 2002-03 squad. During that season, he compiled 23 points (10 goals, 13 assists) playing in 55 games. He was also an assistant captain of Team USA’s fourth place 2003 IIHF U-18 Team that played in Russia. In addition, Dowell was also a member of the USA team that won the gold medal at the 2002 World U-17 Challenge in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
Talent Analysis
Dowell is a forward who plays both ends of the ice extremely well and is excellent on faceoffs. A unique skill that Dowell possesses is his ability to recover his own faceoff wins and get off a quick shot in the same sequence. He possesses tremendous hockey smarts coupled with good vision and anticipation. He is solid positionally and defensively responsible. He has good hand-eye coordination and good skating ability. Although, he could stand to play the body more, he is very good in checking situations. His play along the boards and in the corners is also quite good. He has good size and body strength. He can make it difficult against opposing defenders to contain him. He possesses a great work ethic and has shown a willingness to block shots and provide screens in front of opposing goaltenders. He possesses a quick release, but could stand to shoot the puck more. Dowell’s versatility allows him to play in just about any type of situation.
