History
2007-08: Backstopping the St. John’s Fog Devils (QMJHL), Jake Allen finished the season with a 9-12-0 record, a 3.14 goals against average and a .901 save percentage. On top of seeing QMJHL action, the netminder also represented Team Canada at the U-18 WC tournament. He went 6-1-0 with two shutouts and a 1.43 goals against average.
2008-09: Allen played for the Montreal Juniors (formerly the St. John’s Fog Devils) in 2008-09 and his stock definitely rose. During the season, the tall and lanky goaltender had 28 wins and 25 losses with a respectable .916 save percentage and a 2.86 goals against average. He also earned a spot on the QMJHL team for the 2008 ADT Canada-Russia Challenge.
2009-10: Allen played 27 games for the Montreal Juniors with an 11-11-0 record, 2.66 goals against average, and .912 save percentage. The netminder was traded midseason to the Drummondville Voltigeurs where he recorded an 18-3-0 record, 1.75 goals against average, and .933 save percentage. Between both stops, Allen went 29-14-0 with a 2.20 goals against average and .922 save percentage in his third year. His stellar season earned him the QMJHL's Jacques Plante Trophy for best goaltender, as well as the CHL's Goaltender of the Year award. Allen also backstopped Canada's U-20 WJC team to a silver medal with a 2.06 goals against average and .902 save percentage in 5 games.
2010-11: Allen had a strong first pro season as a 20-year-old – appearing in 47 of 80 games for St. Louis' AHL affiliate Peoria and being named to the AHL All-Star Game. Sharing the Rivermen goaltending duties with former University of Maine goalie Ben Bishop, Allen finished with a record of 25-22 with 3 losses in OT and had 6 shutouts with a 2.52 GAA and .917 save percentage. Allen started three of four playoff games as the Rivermen were swept by Houston and was 0-3 with a 3.80 GAA and .888 save percentage.
2011-12: Allen made his NHL debut – appearing briefly in one playoff game for the Blues – and handled the bulk of the goaltending for AHL Peoria following the trade of veteran Ben Bishop to the Ottawa Senators organization. Allen saw his only NHL action in Game 5 of the Blues series with Los Angeles, replacing starter Brian Elliott in the third period during a St. Louis power play so that St. Louis would not have to use a timeout. He did not see any shots in 1:07 minutes of action before Elliott went back in net. In 38 games with Peoria he was 13-20-2 with 1 shutout and had a 2.93 goals against and .915 save percentage. The Rivermen missed the AHL playoffs after finishing fourth in the Midwest Division.
Talent Analysis
He displays excellent lateral movement and strong positional play. Allen is always on his toes and moves quickly between the pipes. He’s great at moving the puck, feeding the puck to open defenders to quickly spur on the attack. He’s also strong at controlling the puck when he makes a save, limiting rebounds and keeping square to the shooter. Vulnerable up high.
Future
Allen will play his third season at the AHL level and continue his development towards the NHL. He could be an injury replacement for the Blues' goaltending in the 2012-13 season.
