Jakob Silfverberg

History

2006-07: Jakob Silfverberg spent the season with Brynas’ U18 (U18 Allsvenskan) and U20 squads, netting three goals and 11 points with the U18 team and another goal and four points in the SuperElit league. He also competed in the illustrious TV-Pucken tournament, again joining up with Gastrikland and netting seven goals in eight games. He skated in nine games with the Swedish National U17 squad, scoring a goal and five points in international play.

2007-08: Silfverberg spent another season in Brynas’ system, appearing in 30 games with the U20 squad (SuperElit). He racked up career-highs in goals (8), assists (12) and points (20) and had the best face-off percentage (64, 38%) in the SuperElit (North). He also saw action with the Swedish National U18 team, netting a goal and three points at the WJC-18, and was nominated as a Top 3 Player on the Team. He was also a number of the U18 World Cup (Ivan Hlinka Memorial) Champion squad.

2008-09: The Swede spent the season with Brynas U20 (SuperElit), netting 14 goals and 38 points in 30 games. His career-high numbers or the fact that his squad took the SuperElit title may have been a reason for his nomination to Sweden’s National U19 and U20 squads, where he continued to put up good numbers; eight games with the U19 squad resulted in five points (3g+2a), and four more with the U20 team gave the winger another four points (2g+2a) Expect to see him start next season with Brynas’ top squad in the Elitserien league.

2009-10: A second season in the SEL brought with it added responsibility; this time appearing in 48 games in comparison to his 16 the year prior. Jakob was able to light the lamp eight times with eight helpers for Brynäs IF. At the WJHC in Saskatchewan, Canada he helped Sweden to get the bronze netting three goals and contributing two assists in six games.

2010-11: A breakout third season in the SEL with Brynäs IF where he more than double the production of the previous season with 18 goals and 16 assists in the regular season and another four assists in five playoff contests. Silfverberg also played for his country at the WHC garnering an assist and plus one rating in nine games earning a silver medal.

2011-12: Silfverberg made his NHL debut in the playoffs — skating in Games 6 and 7 of the Senators' first round series with the Rangers  — after winning an Elitserien championship with Brynas in his native Sweden. He had no points with two penalty minutes, averaging just over nine minutes of ice time, in two games with Ottawa. Silfverberg was the playoff MVP in Sweden as Brynas, after finishing fourth in the regular season, captured the playoff championship. Silfverberg scored 24 goals with 30 assists in 49 regular season games and was Brynas' leading scorer in the playoffs with 13 goals and 7 assists; finishing plus-17 in 17 games. Silfverberg played for Sweden at the 2012 IIHF World Championship, scoring 2 goals and finishing minus-one in eight games.

 

Talent Analysis

Silfverberg is a strong skating two-way forward with good hockey sense. He is a very smart and mature player and is solid both offensively and defensively. Silfverberg has good technical skills and plays with plenty of intensity. His shot is quick, but could be more accurate and he could stand to play more physical. Opinions about Silfverberg's career differ. Some see a potential star player in him, while other see his potential limited to that of a role player.

 

Future

Signed to a three-year NHL entry level contract, Silfverberg is investing one more year of development in the SEL to further progress the physical and mental elements of his play.
