History
In 2001-02 Pemberton played in the EJHL for New England and led the team’s defense in scoring during the year with 35 points. He committed to playing at Providence College in 2002-03 and got into 33 games, chipping in offensively with two goals, nine assists for a total of eleven points, adding 18 PIM. The Panthers picked him in the fourth round of the 2003 Entry Draft, 124th overall with their sixth pick in the draft.
In his sophomore season (2003-04) with the Friars, Pemberton played in all 37 games, tallying eight assists and 30 PIM.
Talent Analysis
At 6’4, 215 pounds, Pemberton is a large defenseman, the type of player that former GM Rick Dudley liked. Pemberton is not only big but has some speed and demonstrated skill with the puck throughout his high school years and his season in the EJHL with New England.
However, since arriving at Providence his offensive game hasn’t flourished. In 2003-04 he failed to score a goal and more than half of his assists were second assists, not all that uncommon for a defenseman, but not good for a player that was selected at least partly for their offensive game.
Despite his offensive problems, he has played a far more prominent defensive role with the team, playing on the team's top defensive pairing a lot of the time. He has been steady on his own blueline.
