History

2005-06: It was a banner of a junior year for Jamie Hunt. After finishing his sophomore campaign with a modest 17 points, the Calgary, AB native exploded for 45 points (12 goals, 33 assists) in 33 games for the Lakers in 2005-06. Hunt’s 45 points was second in the nation in scoring among defensemen. He also finished tied for first in the nation with Denver’s Matt Carle (SJ) in points per game (1.36). His outstanding season earned him a spot on the Atlantic Hockey All-Conference First Team. He was also named Mercyhurst’s MVP as well as Top Defenseman at the team’s season-ending awards banquet.

While the Washington Capitals were fortunate enough to land Jamie Hunt, they weren’t alone in heavily scouting the talented offensive defenseman. The Anaheim Ducks and his hometown Calgary Flames were among several NHL teams that reportedly showed very serious interest as well.

2006-07: With two goals and 10 assists in 35 games in his rookie season with the Hershey Bears, Hunt got a shot to play for the Capitals for one game in December, in which he was a -1.  He missed significant time due to a broken wrist that required surgery.

Talent Analysis

Hunt is an excellent skating offensive defenseman. At 6’2/195, he also has good size. What Hunt makes him such a great player and which also sets him apart from many collegiate defensemen is his tremendous agility and speed. He moves extremely well and has great acceleration. It’s an attribute that Hunt takes full advantage of, particularly when joining the play. He is also a superb puck-handler and can make beautiful tape-to-tape passes. He can get pucks to the net and has a good shot. While he is an offensive defenseman, Hunt is also very good in his own zone. He is particularly solid in one-on-one situations. He is not particularly a physical player, though he will play the body when necessary. However, if Hunt is to be successful at the next level, he’ll need to add more strength to his 6’2 frame.

Future

Hunt is expected to suit up for the Hershey Bears in the 2007-08 season
