Jan Stencel is a mobile defenseman with big shot and all-round abilities. As most European blueliners who generate interest from NHL teams at the draft, Stencel skates fast and is good at quarterbacking a powerplay. When not on the blue line, he is still very effective in his own end, stopping offenders even by throwing his weight around, which is something he does pretty often.
Stencel looks like a natural leader. However, he hasn't been given captaincy in any of his teams recently. Nonetheless, he doesn't lack leadership and that shows at all levels – he was the top scorer of his team's defense en route to both U18 and U20 Czech Championships. Also, Stencel was named one of the three stars of the Czech team at the 2013 U18 WJC in Russia.
The biggest concern about Stencel is his size. At the beginning of this past season, Stencel was 5-foot-9 and weighed in at 176 pounds. According to the official roster of the Czech U18 team for the 2013 WJC, he lost eleven pounds during the season while adding less than an inch to his height. It's becoming evident that he's going to need to bulk up if he ever wants a shot at making it in the NHL.
