-11: Jared McCann made his debut in midget hockey as a 14-year-old β€” skating in three regular season games and three playoff contests with the Elgin Middlesex AAA team in Ontario. He scored three goals in the playoffs after being held scoreless in the regular season.

-12: McCann appeared in eight junior A games with the London Nationals and led the London Junior Knights Gold to an Ontario minor midget championship. He scored 1 goal in four regular season games for the Nationals and had 2 goals with 1 assist in four playoff contests. He also skated in one game with the Junior Knights’ midget AAA team – scoring 1 goal with 1 assist. In 52 minor midget games he scored 54 goals with 49 assists. McCann was the leading scorer for Knights Gold in the OHL Cup β€” scoring 2 goals with 8 assists and 18 penalty minutes in five games, β€”and was the fourth player taken in the 2012 OHL Priority Draft; selected in the first round by Sault Ste. Marie.

-13: McCann skated in 64 OHL games in his first season with Sault Ste. Marie and was one of eight Greyhounds with 20 or more goals as the club reached the playoffs for just the second time in five seasons. He represented Canada Ontario in the 2013 U17 World Hockey Challenge. McCann scored 21 goals with 23 assists and was -6 with 35 penalty minutes. The Greyhounds finished second in the West Division. McCann suffered a concussion in the first game of the playoffs against Owen Sound and missed the rest of the series. In five games for Canada Ontario at the WHC he scored 1 goal with 2 assists and had 2 penalty minutes.

-14: McCann skated for the gold-medal winning Canada U18 squad at the 2013 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament in August before returning to Sault Ste. Marie for his second season with the Greyhounds. In five games at the Ivan Hlinka tournament he scored 1 goal and was an even plus/minus.

After a sterling rookie regular season last year, you could forgive Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds forward Jared McCann for expecting more of the same as the playoffs began. But his very first playoff contest came to an abrupt end, knocked out of the playoffs due to a concussion suffered as a result of an open-ice hit by Owen Sound’s Cameron Brace.
