History
Immonen has been one of the top players in his age group for years. He has even won a couple of awards in this way, for instance when he was named the best U-17 Finnish player in 2001.
Immonen spent nearly all of the 2001-02 season and the entire 2002-03 season with the junior A team of the Espoo Blues. He established himself as a burgeoning threat in the league during the 2001-02 season. He followed that season with a year contending for the league lead in both goal scoring and points collected, finishing fifth and second overall, respectively.
Immonen has had rather average showings in the post seasons for the Blues junior team, but in all fairness, once he was a rookie, and the second time around, he may have been nursing an injury that limited his effectiveness.
Immonen has seen some international competition, but his biggest tournament was the U18 WJC in 2002. At that tournament, he produced effectively, giving the Finnish squad a nice pair of offensively productive lines at the tournament. He did not participate at the 2003 U20 WJC, but he was a prime alternate for Finland.
Talent Analysis
Strengths: Immonen is a natural two-way player. He has a solid foundation of offensive skills to go with responsible defensive play. He is elusive in traffic, being agile and possessing good stickhandling, but he has recently begun to add the size necessary to compete physically. He has very good instincts in the offensive zone both positionally and timing-wise.
Weaknesses: Immonen has few major weaknesses now that he has added size, but he could still refine aspects of his game. He will need to use his newfound size and become somewhat aggressive physically. Also, if he works on improving the power of his shots, he could become a more dynamic scoring threat. During the 2002-03 season, Immonen suffered an injury that limited his training over the summer; this may be a slight setback.
Future
If he works on his shot and physical game, there is an outside chance he could end up among Finland's top forwards. Remaining healthy will also be important for the young Finn's future.
