History

2011-12: Jean-Christophe Beaudin appeared in four midget AA games with the Mortagne Grand Ducs Espoir team in suburban Montreal and skated for the club’s bantam team. He had one assist in Espoir play.

2012-13: Beaudin played for College Antoine-Girouard Gaulois as a 15-year-old in his first season in the Quebec midget AAA league. He scored 3 goals with 8 assists and 8 penalty minutes in 26 regular season games. College Antoine-Girouard reached the playoff semifinals, falling to Laval-Montreal, 2-1, in the decisive final game of their best-of-seven series. Beaudin scored 1 goal with 1 assist and 8 penalty minutes in 13 playoff games. Beaudin was selected by Rouyn-Noranda in the fourth round (74th overall) of the 2013 QMJHL Entry Draft.

2013-14: Beaudin made his QMJHL debut with Rouyn-Noranda in a cameo appearance at the end of December and played in three late season contests and two playoff games for the Huskies following his midget AAA season with College Antoine-Girouard. He had no points nor penalties with an even plus/minus in six QMJHL games. Beaudin scored 19 goals with 28 assists and 42 penalty minutes in 40 regular season games for the Gaulois. College Antoine-Girouard was swept in a best-of-five preliminary series by College Charles-Lemoyne. Beaudin had no points nor penalties in three playoff games.

2014-15: Beaudin tied 19-year-old Mathieu Lemay for second on the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies with 39 assists, eight behind team-leader Francis Perron (Ottawa), as a QMJHL rookie. One of two players along with Lemay to skate in all 68 regular season games for the Huskies, he scored 14 goals and was +16 with 29 penalty minutes.  Rouyn-Noranda finished fourth in the West Division, falling to Val-d’Or in a first-round series. Beaudin scored 1 goal with 4 assists and was -8 with 4 penalty minutes in six playoff games. He was invited to the NHL Prospects Combine and was ranked 64th amongst North American skaters in the Central Scouting final rankings. Beaudin was selected by Colorado in the third round (71st overall) in the 2015 NHL Draft.

Talent Analysis

Beaudin is a highly cerebral player known for his speed and slapshot. Both attributes allow him to play the point on the power play. He is an excellent back checker and responsible in all three zones.

Future

Beaudin is projected as a third line player at the NHL level but he still has a long way to go before he gets there. Now in his second QMJHL season with Rouyn-Noranda in 2015-16, he continues to put up points for the Huskies. If he can add body strength and address the weaknesses in his game while continuing to improve he may not spend much time in the AHL.

The QMJHL returned to being a most popular league amongst NHL scouts and executives this season, and that was proven at the 2015 NHL Draft. In total, 30 of the 211 picks at the draft were players who spent last season in the QMJHL, up from just 17 in the 2014 NHL Draft. Read more»
