Prospect Grade: 5.0 B  (About Prospect Grades)

History

Jean-Claude Sawyer was part of a strong defensive corps with the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles, who played in front of Marc-Andre Fleury and then Ondrej Pavelec, a good situation for any young defenseman.

Minnesota's 8th choice (5th round), 161st overall, in 2004 NHL Entry Draft. Unsigned by the Wild.

Signed by the Blackhawks in the summer of 2007.

2007-08: Despite seeing action in Rockford, Sawyer spent most of the season in Pensacola (ECHL). He was third on the team with 32 points and led all defensemen in scoring. However, Sawyer’s defensive play continued to be one of his weaknesses.

Talent Analysis

Sawyer is an offensive defenseman.  His defense lacks -- he doesn't stay very tight on his man and needs to ramp up his intensity level as a pro.

Future

Unlikely to move up much from where he's at.
