Jeremy Williams
Prospect Grade: 7.0 D (About Prospect Grades)
History
Williams was eligible, but not drafted in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft. A teammate of Maple Leafs prospect Ian White, Williams burst out offensively in 2003, leading the Broncos in scoring with 93 points. He was named to Team WHL for the 2003 Re-Max Canada/Russia Challenge.
2003-04: Williams continued to build on his fine WHL totals in his third full season with Swift Current, finishing second in league scoring. Named the WHL Player of the Month for November 2003. Named to the 2003-04 WHL Eastern Conference First All-Star team. He signed a contract with the Leafs at the end of his WHL season, and debuted with St. John's for four of their final regular season games.
2004-05: Williams really established himself offensively with the team last season (75 games, 16 goals, 20 assists). During the season, he solidified his reputation as a playmaker with an edge.
2005-06: This year, his offensive production is up. He was sidelined for almost three weeks with a shoulder injury. As Williams has grown more comfortable with this level of play, he has shown more and more of his speed and shotmaking abilities.
2006-07: After starting the season in the AHL, Williams suffered a leg injury in a Nov. 17 game and did not return until Feb. 10. He finished the season with six goals and nine assists for 15 points in 23 games. Williams also got the call to the big club for one game, and as he did in 2005-06,where he played one game and tallied one goal on one shot.
Talent Analysis
A gifted offensive player, Williams is an adept playmaker who can also finish. Williams has an edge to his game, and although he's slight in build, does not back down from larger defenders. Drafted as a 19-year-old, there are some concerns that Williams size and defensive play will hold him back at the professional levels. His skating has really improved in the last two years, but there is always room for improvement in that area. Williams has really improved his acceleration and top-end speed in recent years, which has helped him offensively.
