Prospect Grade: 7.0 B  (About Prospect Grades)

History

Played three seasons of high school hockey for Stevens Points, Wisc. In his junior season Pavelski led the Stevens Point Area Senior High (SPASH) to the Wisconsin DI High School State Title leading all Wisconsin forwards in scoring. Pavelski also represented the Tier I Team Wisconsin midget team that competed in various tournaments.

Pavelski spent his senior year of high school with the Waterloo Blackhawks of the USHL for the 2002-03 season. Helping bring Waterloo back to respectability, Pavelski was named a USHL First Team All-Star, USHL Rookie of the Year, and obviously also named to the USHL All-Rookie Team. Leading the Hawks in all offensive categories Pavelski finished fourth in USHL scoring, first in goals, and fourth in plus/minus, power play goals, and shots. The USHL play-offs brought more of the same, as Pavelski topped or tied all offensive categories for the Blackhawks except for plus/minus, in which Pavelski finished tied for second. Despite playing in only seven play-off games, Pavelski's 12 points were good for 3rd in USHL play-off scoring.

Pavelski's impressive season caught the eye of the San Jose Sharks, who selected the center in the seventh round, 205th overall, of the 2003 NHL Entry Draft.

Talent Analysis

Possessing solid two-way awareness and a good set of hands for passing or scoring, Pavelski's skating needs work. Needing to bend his knees more when he skates, Pavelski would likely benefit from concentrating on gaining lower body strength in upcoming seasons to improve his acceleration, top speed and agility.
