History

2005-06: Junland had incredible development this past season, being the highest scoring defenseman in the Swedish juniors. His numbers, 40 points including 17 goals in 32 games, are quite remarkable for a defenseman. He added about 16 pounds of muscle before this past season and it had a very good affect on his play.

2006-07: Junland played most of his season with SEL finalist Linkopings. He fared well, despite his youth, and enjoyed an excellent playoff run, which saw him net five points in 15 games. He also played briefly with the junior team and in Allsvenskan league in preparation for the World Juniors, a tournament where he was one of Team Sweden’s top players.

2007-08: Junland played in a career-high 52 games for Linkopings HC (SWE) this season. The blueliner recorded three goals and 17 assists, and added another seven points (4g+3a) in 16 postseason games.

2008-09: In his first taste of North American hockey, Junland was a potent offensive defenseman for the AHL's Peoria Rivermen. He scored 13 goals, 18 assists for 31 points in 70 games, earning a spot in the AHL All-Star game. He skated in 5 playoff games with Peoria, scoring 1 assists and 6 PIMs. He also made his NHL debut with St. Louis, but did not score in 1 game.

2009-10: Junland again spent much of the season with Peoria, scoring 14 goals, 30 assists in 74 games. His 44 points led the team's defensemen and his 11 power play goals led the entire team. He played in the AHL All-Star game for the second consecutive year and got a little longer look in St. Louis, appearing in 3 NHL games and notching 2 assists.

2010-11: Junland was tendered a qualifying offer by the Blues in June 2010 but chose to sign a one-year contract with Farjestads BK in Sweden's Elitserien. He scored 5 goals with 17 assists and was +7 with 18 PMs in 41 regular season games. Farjestads finished tied with HV71 and Skelleftea atop the league standings with 96 points and won the playoff title. In 14 playoff games Junland scored 3 goals with 3 assists and was +8 with 12 PMs.
 

Talent Analysis

Junland is a good skater and has fine hands. Hockey sense is good and big strength of his is the way he gets the puck on the target. Junland has a good shot that is very accurate. Looking at the parts of his game that Junland should improve, his defensive awareness could still use some fine tuning. He could also play more determined and more physical at times. Also, sometimes Junland tends to overwork easy situations.

Future

Junland is now playing for Astana Barys in the KHL.

A look at the Montreal Prospects camp

The Prospects Tournament was held in Hull last night. It was also a good opportunity to check out the up and coming stars for Florida, Tampa and Ottawa. Ottawa seemed to have the best prospects, followed by Tampa, then Florida. Montreal gets 4th by default.

There’s no knight in shiny armor in the crew of Montreal prospects. Below is how each player did. Keep in mind this is only one game and they’ve probably never played together before so they did look out of place.

Gordie Dwyer-Excellent fore checker, solid body checks, 1 assist, 2 fights (one win, one draw) will play in Quebec (AHL) but zero chance of any NHL time in my opinion.

Konstantin Sidulov-Didn’t impress, didn’t disappoint, was pretty much invisible. He was a little on the small side.

Francois Beauchemin-Brisebois, Robidas…you get the picture. May make it to NHL just because the Habs always give these guys a shot. Kind of reminds me of Brian Campbell, smallish and non-physical but a strong skater and nice passer.

Matt Carkner-Raw, good size, no offensive skills, weak skater but could be the next Brad Brown which isn’t too bad really. He could play for another team down the road.

Jason Lehoux- 2 fighting majors, lost one badly to Kyle Freadrich of Tampa, drew on the second. Didn’t look terribly out of place on a terrible looking team.

Championship Game Rematch set After Blues dispose of Detroit

The St. Louis “baby blues”, after beating the Red Wings 5-3, will now face Nashville in the rookie tournament championship game. This is a chance to avenge last years surprising loss to the Pred’s in the final. However, this group of Blues propects seems to be a more talented group from top to bottom. Everyone has contributed to the success of this years team. In game three the Blues used timely scoring to do in Detroit. Down 1-0 early, St. Louis scored the next three goals. Jame Pollock had a goal and an assist and Marc Brown had two goals, including the game winner, to lead the way. Jeremy Reich chipped in with two assists. Trevor Wasyluk scored his second goal of the tournament to seal the victory. Overall it was a strong team effort and the youngsters have confidence going in to the final against Nashville. Stay tuned for the dramatic finish to this tournament and a summary of who did well and who disappointed in Traverse City, Michigan.

NHL Prospect Shootout 2 – Day 2 Roundup

The organizers of this tournament had to be unhappy after the first night
of action. A bench clearing brawl initiated by Ty Jones gave the tournament
a black eye and had to hope for better results during Tuesday night’s games.
Unfortuantly, it went from fight night to blowouts. The Detroit Red Wings
and Chicago Blackhawks were blown right out of the Grand Traverse Bay area
and ended up somewhere across Lake Michigan. Or at least it seemed that
way. If you liked watching teams self-destruct, this was your night.

GAME 3 – Detroit VS. Nashville

On paper, this game looks even. Both teams have a marquee prospect in
Brian Finley and Jiri Fischer. Each lack much depth at forward. But on the
ice it was a much a different story. While the Wings didnt play awful, the
defense rested in stretches. The Predators took the lead 10 seconds into
the game and never looked back, beating the Red Wings 6-3.

The Predators scored three goals in the first and again in the second
period and that was more than enough. The Predators had no real star on
this night but they did have a solid defensive game. Ed Hill, Brett Angel,
and Kent Sauer all had strong defensive efforts. Sauer also added two
assists. Martin Bartek added a goal and an assist leading the offense.
